Your a 18 year old freshman in college. You go with your new roommate to a party off campus, ignoring the smell coming from him and the obvious fact that he hasn't showered in weeks. You walk into the party. A guy opens the door, and asks how old your are. When you reply 18 he says sorry you can't drink, then watches you look dejected after walking a half mile to this party in the god damn snow and says "naw man im just playing, beer's in the fridge." You proceed to get wasted. On a Wednesday. Welcome to college. (disclaimer: this is not from personal experience i usually go to church on Wednesday night...and by church i mean bar *zing*....just kidding i don't go out and drink on Wednesday's.Who do you think I am a college student?...o wait.)


But now people have taken it upon themselves to make these parties more sufficient and better equipped! Equipment!

A new group called "Choose Responsibility" has been formed and is seeking to lower the legal drinking age from 21 to 18. I think they have gained support from over 100 college presidents including the president of the Ohio State University (boo!). They present a unique argument as to why they want to lower this age. Lets look into these arguments.

Pro 18 arguments.

People who generally agreeing with this stance.
-Anybody who is a member of a fraternity and is enrolled in college.
-Those 100 college presidents
-Oprah (she wants all voting age citizens to be wasted so she can trick us into voting for gay marriage, just like she did with Obama).
-Any male between the ages of 20 and 18. Or is about to celebrate his 21st in style.

1. 18 is the legal age for everything in the United States except for drinking. If you can fight in Iraq, Vote, Marry,Enter into binding contracts and serve on a jury you can drink. (If you do all of those things in one day you should probably have a drink). Also in a lot of cultures the drinking age is synchronized with the legal adult age hence the U.S. is out of sync. (especially since N*SYNC broke up *zing*.....I know im killing all credibility).

2. 18-20 year olds are doing a great deal to conceal their underage drinking and are doing so away from the supervision of parents, RA's and other adult figures. (well duh its illegal). Drinking at remote locations away from supervision puts not only the drinker but the citizen at greater risk.

3.The legal age of 21 encourages binge drinking. (which is, like,bad right?)

4. Having the age at 21 disenfranchises parents from facing the realities of underage drinking. They must either completely ignore the situation and not allow their children to drink or serve their kids alcohol to allow for proper supervision. Lowering the age would allow parents to teach their children informed, healthy decisions about alcohol. (EAT YOUR GOD DAMN BROCCOLI NOW!, parent telling kid to make a healthy decision).

5. Underage drinkers do not realize that every time they open a beer they are breaking the law. It creates an enviorment where younger kids are disrespectful to the law. Having the age at 21 is like having prohibition in the 1920's. (Well maybe except their's no mob violence).

1. More high school senior's don't drink now then when the age was lower. (some frat brothers would say this is an argument for lowering the age but chill "brah"..its not.) Scientific studies show that more than three times as many 18 yr olds are not drinking alcohol. (you blinded me with science.)

2.Prevention has been successful. (that's what she said. OH!) 25,ooo lives have been saved since the drinking age was moved to 21. (this website sites its sources and it comes from a study done by the U.S. department of Transportation. Study.)

3. Science confirms that teen drinking has long term consequences. (like a potential hangover filled day.) Because the adolescent brain is not fully developed until the mid 20's; drinking before your 21 can harm brain development and function. (explains Joel...jk...Dad: jk is internet lingo for Just Kidding.)

4. Lowering the drinking age would normalize potentially addicting behavior. Lowering the drinking age would send the wrong message to America's youth and would normalize behavior that has potential to be both dangerous and addictive. (and you know who would be sending that message? That's right. Effing Oprah.)

5. Delaying the age of onset is in the best interest of youth. People who begin drinking before age 15 are four times as likely to develop alcohol dependence as an adult.

Never ceases to amaze me how dumb people are. First of all being gay isn't hereditary. Durrr. Obviously people who are gay had to be conceived by a heterosexual couple.Or the pregnant man had sex with himself. (Which reminds me he's pregnant AGAIN). So they will not just be eliminated from the gene pool, in fact homosexuality has been around for thousands of years.

What doesnt the last guy understand about the meaning of the word gay? Gay people like people of the same sex. I thought every body over the age of 6 understood that. I guess not in Georgia.

The Truth About Welfare

In case your to slow to pick it up, this cartoon is making fun of the public view on welfare. If one was to walk down the street and ask random people what they thought about the current welfare system and what they thought about the people on it, one would almost certainly get the same stereotypical answers. 85% of people would say "I think welfare doesn't do anything but encourage lazy people to not find jobs and sit on there lazy asses" and/or "Welfare is a waste of tax dollars and giving money to the poor only increases their likeliness to stay poor" and don't forget "I think that people on welfare only arrived at their situation because of their own decisions, its their own fault for being poor".

To all those people who think any above statements are true, its okay I understand that you are to lazy to think for yourself and that it is easier to just follow what everyone else thinks. But all those statements are false and it is stereotyping. The truth is that people on welfare are poor because of several reasons. The first reason is societal factors. Some of these factors include; inadequate education, transportation, child care, and mental health problems. Another reason for the poor being poor is the repeating of the class system.For example, if one comes from a poor family, more than likely one is going to be poor. There are numerous studies that will agree with this statement. A third reason for poverty is the organization of the economy. Jared Bernstein of the Economic Policy Institute identifies wage decline as the crucial economic factor that has had the largest impact on poverty rates. Also economist talk about the level of natural unemployment, which means that a certain percent of the labor force must be unemployed so that businesses will have workers available when they need to expand. This rate runs between 4 and 10%. Some people contribute poverty to social isolation, or the idea the since the poor live in poor areas, they are denied contact with the wide variety of influences and opportunities the rest of society enjoys. Others contribute poverty to the fact that poor people are trapped in a vicious cycle. Some points of this theory are that poor people spend more time defending themselves from crimes due to the fact that they are more likely to be a victim of a crime. Another important and notable point is that poor individuals pay more for things. For example, poor people pay more in interest when they get loans, and they pay more for things at stores in the ghetto. There are several other controversial theories to why the poor are poor. One theory is called the situational adaptation interpretation. This theory basically says that the poor are limited on the amount of choices they have, therefore they have to choose bad ones because they have no choice. A second theory is call the culture of poverty theory, this deals with the idea that the poor have a different set of values. A third theory worth mentioning is called the human capital theory. This theory states that the poor lack the knowledge, skills, and attributes that make them valuable to employers.

All those theories point to the idea that there are bigger reasons other than personal responsibility for being poor. But now we must stomp the myth that the poor stay poor once on welfare. The truth is that most poor people are classified as transitional poor. That is, they are poor for one to three years. The census bureau breaks it down like this:17%transitional, 11.6% intermittently, 4.9%persistently poor, and 66.4% never poor. Special Note: the marginal poor are those that generally have jobs but because of low educational levels and few skills, the jobs they have are low paying and insecure.Most welfare programs require those applying to have a job, or have monthly meetings to show that they are trying.

Welfare is not a waste of tax dollars, nor is it a huge chunks of one's paycheck. The actual cost of welfare programs-about 1 percent of the federal budget and 2 percent of state budgets is proportionally less than generally believed. During the 104th Congress, more than 93 percent of the budget reductions in welfare entitlements came from programs for low-income people. Ironically, middle-class and wealthy Americans also receive "welfare" in the form of tax deductions for home mortgages, corporate and farm subsidies, capital gains tax limits, Social Security, Medicare, and a multitude of other tax benefits. Yet these types of assistance carry no stigma and are rarely considered "welfare". Anti-welfare sentiment appears to be related to attitudes about class and widely shared and socially sanctioned stereotypes about the poor. Racism also fuels negative attitudes toward welfare programs.

I haven't talked about all the stereotypes with welfare. There are many more that can be debunked using actual facts about welfare.

Next time you think of welfare make sure you think about facts and not stereotypes.

Obviously this photo has been photo shopped. But further study indicates that because of his clothes, mullet, 'stache, and spelling abilities he is most likely a resident of West Virginia, Alabama or Texas. Either way this photo describes the main reaction I have gotten from Republicans: that I was an absolute idiot for voting for Obama. Me and 64 million other Americans were idiots for voting for Obama? Right. Well usually i explain my reasons for voting for Obama such as his tax plan, his plan for the enviorment, his plan about the Iraq war, having a sane human being as a vice president, and when i asked them why they voted for McCain i expected the usual republican answer of not wanting gay marriage, or abortions, or a black person in power (all are way bigger issues than our economy or the war we're in) but i was surprised with alot of the reasons i was hearing why people voted for McCain: based on Vice-presidential candidates. What?! You pitted Biden against Palin and you picked Palin? Thats like having the choice of having a teacher or a turtle teach them math and them picking a turtle. That leads me to believe that people did not know who Sarah Palin was, so here is what you should've known about Palin before you decided that she was a better choice than Joe Bidden.

1. Sarah Palin asked a librarian if she had the power to ban books when the librarian said no Palin sent her a letter telling her she was going to be fired because the librarian "didn't fully support her." Books are a huge way in which people use free speech and Palin wanted to ban books that did not agree with her views and at the same time suppress free speech. Uh yea let's not take a step back into medieval europe.

2. Palin's acceptance speech at the republican national convention was full of lies and included quote from an absolute wierdo. The quote she included was one from Westbrook Pelger. Pelger was a fascist who was against the civil rights movement, was anti-sematic, and was even kicked out of a society of ultra-conservative crazies for being too extreme! Thats like being kicked out of Nazi Germany for being to hard core of a Nazi. Usually people use a quote from someone they admire and Pelger is not an admirable person. There were other lies in her speech too such as her saying she didn't support the bridge to nowhere, which she did until she realized it probably wasn't the best idea to spend$398 million on a bridge to an island of fifty people. She said she wanted to end abuses of earmark spending but she hired lobbyist to go to Washington and requested $750 million in federal funding. There are many others and you can check them out for yourself here.

3. Despite having a child of her own with special needs and promising to help out parents of special needs kids Palin cut special needs services of children in Alaska by 62% by reducing the spending on it by $5 million. Maybe a lot of special needs children stopped having needs when she took office. I doubt it.

4. Palin opposes abortion. Which is a stance many Americans take but she makes no exceptions even in cases of rape or incest. There is enough shame and pain to live with by being raped. Why make rape victims carry a baby to remind them everyday what has happened to them? She also made rape victims pay for rape kits and forensic examinations. So if you get raped you better have the money to prove it. She also advocates abstinence only education, which doesn't work (just ask Palin's daughter). But if that doesn't work theres always marriage unless your gay. sorry.

5. She wants creationism taught in science classes in schools. O ok sounds good right? One problem: creationism IS NOT SCIENCE.

6. Palin and her husband were fund-raisers for Pat Buchanon. Well she can support whoever she wants right? Right even if that person happens to be a racist, antisemitic, homophobic, sexist, general idiot.

But I guess im the idiot for voting for Obama.

Secondly, it sounds great saying people who earn more should have to pay more, coming from someone who is not rich, maybe even bankrupt, or from someone who gambles and loses all of there money that way, but why should i as a nurse, who will probably be part of the upper middle class, pay for someone who doesnt have a job, lost all of there money, have become bankrupt, or whatever that is not fair to me!!!!! I am paying them alllllll of my hard earned money so they can sit on their ass and collect from the government or should i say me!!!! That is not right!!!"

Where to begin. So according to this lady no matter what religion I follow i have to believe that god made whatever land she's referring to, even if i dont believe in god i have to believe in god. What? God hates fags,she thinks she gonna be part of the upper middle class living in West Unity, (which is anyone that makes over $70,000 btw and Obama wants to tax those making over 250,000) blah blah blah. dumb.

Welcome!

This blog has now been created to share views on whatever the hell me and Zach wanna share views on. We will probably post about some serious stuff and other stuff thats not so serious. This is for anyone who wants to look and for family and friends. Hopefully we can keep up on it.

If you don't know us you must understand the background info on me and Zach. We were both raised in West Unity, Ohio which is in the northwest corner of Ohio 10 miles from Michigan and about 15 miles from Indiana. We were raised in a somewhat conservative household and a very conservative town. We have retained some of the "small town values" but generally we lean left, far left for some. Our parents were divorced and our mom is a very hard working moderate as is her husband Rich. Our dad is a liberal in every sense of the word as his wife Diane, who may i state is the hardest working person i have ever met. Our views have very much been influenced by our Dad and Step-mom, as well our Mom and Step-dad. While we are liberals having a conservative background makes it easy for us to see where Republicans are coming from; most of the time. We are both very sarcastic so do not be confused by any post that may not be as serious as some of these will make no sense to some people taking a serious approach, however; there are some views that we take very seriously.
I just used the word serious entirely too many times in that last sentence, oh well.
